Won by Tony Larner (pictured) who scored a remarkable 5/5 by correctly identifying all the selections in June's tobacco sampling competition. The selections included Clan and Gold Block... Tony must possess strange tastes and have had some unusual smoking experiences! We suspect that his olfactory senses have probably been enhanced as a result of his obvious myopia.

An entertaining quiz evening of early-60s popular music, presented by the Secretary, was won by James Oxley-Brennan with 22 correct answers out of a possible 29. Obviously signs of a misspent youth! Some PCN members did not do quite as well with the webmaster only getting 4 correct answers. A bit before my time. Well, that's my excuse!

I have just seen a very nice fireworks display in Norwich but was horrified by the amount of smoke generated.
There is very little wind this evening and some of the smoke drifted gently to the ground, mingling with the assembled populace.
The health implications of this must be grave. Spectators exposed to this deadly miasma must have ingested many times the recommended yearly maximum dosage of a cocktail of noxious chemicals and have seriously impaired their health.
All fireworks displays must be banned immediately in order to prevent exposure to this "death in the air"!

The so-called 'No Smoking Day' seemed to have no impact in Norwich as far as I could see- I only knew about it when I read today's Guardian, which contained a picture of the Parliamentary Saint of Smoking (John Betts and I met him many years ago when we were invited to a House of Lords and Commons Smoking Club meeting in London). The biography is from a 1989 edition of Vacher's Biographical Guide- good to see he is still puffing.

How to stop that annoying gurgling sound...
|
I have been trying out Philtpads and Dri-kule conical shaped steel pipe filters
In one pipe I put just a Dri-kule conical shaped steel pipe filter and in the other a Dri-kule conical shaped steel pipe filter on top of a Philtpad.
This experiment has been going for the last week or so using just one filter.
Result: Seems like a good idea...
a) there is no wasted tobacco as all the tobacco is consumed
b) the smoke is drier
c) there is no build-up of sludge in the bowl
d) a lot less tobacco is used... each pipe used at least half a gram less tobacco... a saving in my case of about 4gm a day or 28gm per week... this represents a significant monetary saving over the course of a year.
I recommend that you think about giving it a go!
