Leonard "Len" Ellis (1928–2026)

It is with great sadness that the club must report Len's death on January 13, 2026, at the age of 97. Len was a legendary figure in the British pipe-smoking community and a cornerstone of the Pipe Club of Norfolk (PCN). He was widely regarded as one of the most successful competitive pipe smokers in British history.

Key Achievements & Role

Len’s career in competitive smoking was marked by incredible consistency and endurance. He was a master in these competitions at keeping his pipe alight using only the two permitted matches at the start of each competition.

PCN Chairman: He served as the longtime Chairman of the Pipe Club of Norfolk, guiding the club through various challenges, including the 2007 UK smoking ban.

8-Time Norfolk Open Champion Winner: Len dominated the Norfolk Championship, winning the title eight times, including the final official contest in 2006.

British Champion: He held the title of British Pipe Smoking Champion on two occasions in 1996 and 2000.

International Competitor: He frequently represented England in international competitions, including the Dutch and Hungarian Open championships.

Personal Background

Professional Life: Len worked for Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO), starting in London in 1944 before relocating to Norwich, where he eventually retired from the Supplies Division.

Military Connection: He was immensely proud of his RAF service and lifelong connections with the RAF, being an officer in the VRT and president of the Norwich squadron, Air Training Corps.

Reputation: Known among his peers as "an officer and a gentleman," he was celebrated not just for his technical skill with a pipe, but for his good humour and calm leadership within the club.
